Make it Matter Monday!! Blessed are the poor in spirit...

A super long time ago...like really really long ago, Jesus used to like to talk to his friends and teach them all kinds of lessons. He would talk to HUNDREDS of people at one once, but back then they didn't have microphones or speakers or anything so he liked to talk to them from the top of hills. When he was on these hills he was so high up everyone could hear him because of the way the sound travels...kind of like an echo. Anyways, this one time when he was on a hill he gave a famous talk that everyone calls 'The Sermon on the Mount'....which just means, the big talk on the big mountain. You can find this in your Bible in Matthew chapter 5 verses 1-12 (HINT: Matthew is found in the second half of the Bible called the New Testament). At the beginning of the big talk on the big mountain Jesus talks about something called 'the Beatitudes' and we've been learning all about them in Sunday School lately, so I'm gonna share with you what I've been learning.

The first beatitude goes like this: "blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" and I think that sounds confusing. But when it was explained to me it made a lot of sense. So here it is.
Blessed just means you are favoured....as in you're on of God's favourites!!! So from here we could re-write the verse like this: "favourites of God are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
Now we just have to look at what 'poor in spirit means'. When we think of poor people we think of people who have to live on the street and beg for money and food because they don't have any of their own. They need us to help them out because there is no possible way they could feed themselves...cause they have no money. My mom likes to buy those people subway sandwiches! But Jesus wasn't talking about the people who my mom buys subway for, he's talking about the poor in spirit. That means that we can't do anything without God's help....there is no possible way in all the world that we could be good or go to heaven without his help. So: favourites of God are those who are totally dependent on him!! (kinda sounds like something Yoda would say!!!!)
God loves it when we remember how awesome he has been to us and how without him we are nothing. So remember to thank God for the spiritual subway sandwich!

B!
